Love Music Hate Racism Quiz and Teachers’ Notes

This quiz has proved itself extremely popular with students during our outreach visits to secondary schools.

Extracts of music are played, and the students have to match the track to the picture.

Can they name the artist and song?

What else do they know about them?

How has each artist been linked with the fight against racism and fascism?

This quiz can easily be fitted into one lesson. It could equally be used as the basis of research for students to carry out themselves – we found lots of interesting stuff on the internet about each of these artists and their music!

Love Music Hate Racism Tabloid- August 2008

Front page of LMHR tabloid

The struggle against racism and fascism intensified during 2008 in the UK and across europe.

In Britain the fascist BNP had some electoral success; they have now grabbed over 60 local councillors across the country, and gained an unprecedented platform for their racist poison with the election of Barking führer Richard Barnbrook to the Greater London Assembly.

The horrifying violent racist attacks on Roma travellers in Italy have provide d a warning of what to expect here if the BNP are not stopped.

At the same time, a vibrant and determined campaign against the Nazis has reached a level not seen since the 1970s – with millions of anti-BNP leaflets delivered, scores of successful LMHR events, and above all the magnificent Love Music Hate Racism Victoria Park Carnival on 27 April. London’s biggest free music event for 15 years saw 110,000 people rally against the BNP in a celebration of multicultural society.

This growing movement needs more news and more analysis of what’s going on – hence the launch of this new LMHR tabloid. Inside, we look in more depth at how together we can stop the BNP (p2), look back at this year’s Carnival (p7) and ahead to the next, and focus on a blur of LMHR activity this summer in the BNP’s so-called heartlands (p4-5).
